Thông báo này được đưa ra ngày 7-8 giữa lúc Trung Quốc và Philippines đang căng thẳng về bãi Cỏ Mây.
Nằm trong khu vực quần đảo Trường Sa của Việt Nam, Bãi Cỏ Mây cách đảo Palawan của Philippines 105 hải lý (195km). Theo phán quyết của Tòa trọng tài vụ kiện Biển Đông năm 2016, Bãi Cỏ Mây nằm trên thềm lục địa của Philippines.
Tàu BRP Sierra Madre là con tàu Philippines cố tình giữ lại ở bãi Cỏ Mây như một biểu tượng nhằm “khẳng định chủ quyền” tại Trường Sa.
Trong khi đó Trung Quốc cũng tuyên bố chủ quyền với hầu hết Biển Đông, bao gồm hai quần đảo Trường Sa và Hoàng Sa của Việt Nam.
Trong các nỗ lực tranh chấp, đây cũng không phải lần đầu Trung Quốc yêu cầu Philippines dời tàu BRP Sierra Madre. Năm 2021, bộ trưởng quốc phòng Philippines khi ấy, ông Delfin Lorenzana, đã bác bỏ một yêu cầu tương tự của Trung Quốc.
Trước đó, vào ngày 5-8, lực lượng Hải cảnh Trung Quốc đã chặn một tàu của Lực lượng Bảo vệ bờ biển Philippines, khi con tàu này làm nhiệm vụ hộ tống các tàu tiếp tế cho quân nhân trên tàu BRP Sierra Madre đóng ở bãi Cỏ Mây.
Theo thông tin từ phía Tuần duyên Philippines, Trung Quốc đã sử dụng thiết bị bắn nước, hay còn gọi là “vòi rồng”, khi ngăn tàu Philippines.
Phát biểu ngày 7-8, Tổng thống Philippines Ferdinand Marcos Jr. khẳng định Manila sẽ tiếp tục “khẳng định chủ quyền và quyền lãnh thổ” bất chấp các thách thức ở Biển Đông, theo Reuters.
Lá cờ Việt Nam trên đảo Trường Sa Lớn đã trở lại trên hai ứng dụng của Google ngày 18-7, ngoại trừ phiên bản Pro cho máy tính của Google Earth.
